The
Riviera area enjoys a Mediterranean climate wih mild, pleasant,
warm and sunny summers and mild winds that cool summer days. The
climate is stable, mild and healthy, while the area boasts
between 2,400 and 2,500 sunny days a year.
The average air temperature during the winter months is
aproximately 10°C (50 F) while the summer temperature usually
does not rise above 27° to 29°C (80 to 84 F). This makes the
Riviera's average yearly temperature around 15°C (59 F).
It is possible to swim in the sea in early May when the sea
temperature reaches about 18°C (64 F). In the summer months it
goes up to 26°C (79 F), while in peaceful September it stays in
the comfortable range between 18° and 20° C (64 to 68 F).
Even though summer days of the swimming season are very sunny,
the temperature never gets to be unbearably hot. Mild wind that
is warm and pleasant blows down the Vinodolski channel and cool
off the air.
The wind that blows from the continent to the sea (from the
north) is called
bura. It is cool and has a refreashing
effect on hot coastal temperatures. The wind blowing from the
sea towards the continent is called
jugo and although it
can sometimes bring humid weather, it always blows warm sea air.
Other types of wind, such as maestral, levanta, burina and
tramontana are especially dear to the sailing enthusiasts.
